Creative 30 - the winners are announced

VICE, Volvo and The Independent team up to announce the winners of the Creative 30 - the UK's next generation of promising creative talent

The first annual Creative 30 competition has been an overwhelming success: garnering more than 700 entries from musicians to artists to sculptors to hat designers to tattooists and everything in between, as well as over twenty thousand votes via creative30.net. We are now delighted to announce the Creative30 winners.

The people's vote, and the brand new VolvoC30 R-DESIGN, goes to 29-year old milliner, William Chambers, from Glasgow: William Chambers gained a first-class honours degree in textile design at the Scottish College of Textiles in 2002 and set up William Chambers Millinery in 2007. William cites birds and cages as his inspiration, and this is evident in the shape, texture and detailing in his work. William has quickly become a sought-after milliner within Scotland and abroad. He was a nominee in the Scottish Fashion Awards 2008 (Accessory Designer of the Year) and recently featured in The List magazine's Style Issue as one of "the hottest young designers in the country", alongside Christopher Kane. In September 2008 he designed hats for Glasgow fashion label Olanic for their Spring/Summer collection at London Fashion Week.

The Panel Prize of ten thousand pounds is awarded to 27 year old artist, Katie Paterson, also from Glasgow: Since graduating from the Slade School of Fine Art last year, Katie Paterson has had solo shows at the Matthew Bown Gallery, R O O M, and Modern Art Oxford, and spent a month 'moongazing' in Japan. Her recent works include Earth-Moon-Earth, the transmission of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata to the moon and back - resulting in fragmented composition being transmitted on a self-playing grand piano and Vatnajokull (the sound of) - a live phone line to an Icelandic glacier. Both works were first presented at Paterson's MFA degree show in 2007 and restaged at her acclaimed solo show at Modern Art Oxford this year. Currently exhibiting at Albion, London; forthcoming shows include Tsekh Gallery, Kiev,

Creative 30 Panelist and Vice Magazine editor Andy Capper commented on the choice, "It was a difficult decision for the Creative 30 Panel to make but ultimately we decided that Katie Patterson would be the recipient of the ten thousand pounds Panel Prize. Katie's art was genuinely intriguing to everyone - it was unlike anything we had seen in any of the entrants. She is out there obsessively mapping all the dead stars in the galaxy and making records out of glaciers and then beaming the sounds into space to the aliens. It also sounds really pretty when humans listen to it. Katie's involvement with scientists and engineers, makes her work not only an interesting and artistic endeavor, but it also educates the viewer and makes them consider the grand scale of our world. She's constantly researching and pushing boundaries with her work, and we felt that she would use the prize money to further her research into infinity and beyond."

Panelist Simon Waterfall, Creative Director at Poke and D&AD President commented on the choice: "The only thing i wrote next to Katie's name on my first round of viewing was WINNER. She is one of those quiet ones whose explanations elicit shock and awe from a stunned audience. Quiet, bold and bright, creative 40." To congratulate Katie and William and to celebrate the very strong, varied and individual identity of the emerging modern talent that this competition has unearthed a gala event will take place on Thursday, December 11th, exhibiting all of the nominees work. The gathering will take place at the Maverik Showroom, 68-72 Redchurch Street, on the 11th December, at 7pm. Guests will include creative30 entrants, our esteemed judging panel of key industry figures, the creative icons who nominated our original 15 contestants and members of the press. The party will continue at Vice's infamous pub, The Old Blue Last, where a selection of DJs will ensure a frenzied end to what has been a dynamic and lively project. Creative 30 - Voting ends soon

VICE, Volvo and The Independent teamed up to find the UK's next generation of hidden creative talent so that we could tell everyone about them and they wouldn't be hidden anymore. The project is called the Creative 30 and from Monday, October 20th through Sunday, November 16th, the public will have the chance to vote for one of two winners at www.creative30.net

Following the eight-week campaign to identify the UK's most promising up-and-coming creative talent, the public can now vote on who will be the winner of a Volvo C30 R-DESIGN. The runner up will be awarded ten thousand pounds in cold hard cash by our esteemed panel of judges. As well as the whole helping to launch their career bit.

Over 700 aspiring young creative types entered the Creative 30 competition to be in with a shout of winning the People's Prize of a Volvo C30 R-DESIGN and the Panel Prize of ten thousand pounds. Public voting kicks off on Sunday, October 20th where 'the people' can cast their vote for the winner. In time honoured fashion, the nominee who receives the most votes by Sunday, November 16th will be crowned the winner and get their hands on the Volvo C30 R- DESIGN. Pretty wow right? Nominees will be encouraged to use their own social networks to gain as many votes as possible. Only one vote can be cast per person per day. Oh, and the winner of the People's Prize is not eligible to win the Panel Prize.

The winners will be announced on Monday, November 24th.
